A Canvas For A Good Cause and Creating Art Deco Layouts

Julianne, joining you here today. A friend recently asked me to donate an item for a charity auction to raise funds for bowel cancer. I was honoured to be asked to donate, especially because I have lost many members of my family to various forms of cancer. After much consideration, I decided to create a canvas for this event. I wanted something pretty and whimsical, feminine and colourful. In the end, I can honestly say it was not easy to part with this canvas (my eldest daughter was devastated that I was giving it away), but I knew it was for a good cause and reason.  

Over many years of scrapbooking and creating, I have seen so many different methods, techniques, and products, for creating canvases. But in this case, I created with my gut instinct. I have used rubons and stamps, layers of paper (Marion Smith's Motley range), texture paste, chipboard, flowers, rhinestone flourishes, glitter, beads, sequins, and copic pens. 

For my fairy wings, I took a large set of the Monarch butterfly wings, cut them in half, embossed them with Antiquities Frosted Crystal embossing powder, stuck them down behind the doll image, and filled in various sections of the wings with Martha Stewart coarse glitter. 

I took a 6"x6" Moroccan chipboard sheet, and cut it into various sized pieces. I then inked them gold, before adhering them to the canvas. Then for something totally different, I filled random sections of the Moroccan sheet with gold beads and turquoise sequins. I then covered everything with Mod Podge to ensure that nothing would fall off, and everything would be protected. 

I can say the fundraising event was a huge success, raising over $1000 for Bowel Cancer research. And my eldest daughter has already put in a request for another canvas for her room. :)

Earlier this year I was approached to create a sketch and three layouts for the Australian Scrapbooking Ideas magazine. The layouts were to be created in the Art Deco style using Meg's Garden papers.The article was recently published in Issue 29 (October) of the magazine, titled "Sketch Interpretation: Art Deco, pages 24-26. Today, I am sharing the sketch and layouts that I created. (You can find the sketch further below). All three layouts have been created using the same sketch. I have simply flipped or rotated the sketch for different outcomes

 "CHERISH"

My first layout was created using the sketch as it was, and by replacing the three mini photos with one large photo. I have added punched borders and chipboard flourishes for depth, detail, and dimension. And I have cut a large flourish into two smaller pieces to create the swirls on my layout. 

I opted to use a pretty shade of pale pink to contrast with the creams, grays, and blacks of the layout. All my chipboard pieces have been inked first, then embossed with various embossing powders. 

LOVE, CHERISH, ADORE

My second layout was created by turning the sketch sideways, to the right. I have used three photos, but have layered them upon each other, instead of displaying them individually. I opted to use a soft gold to compliment the creams, greens and blacks of this layout. 

I have used a large flourish cut into smaller pieces for my swirls among the flowers. Again, I have used lots of punch work for depth and definition, and the chipboard pieces has been coated with various embossing powders. For even more depth, I have fussy cut the flowers, and layered them at different heights.

My third layout was created by taking the sketch and moving the centre of the design to the left of the page. I have clustered flowers and cogs on the page, but have also left a little white space for balance. It's hard to believe, but these photos of Adelaide were taken back in July 2011 - 6 months later we were living here because I fell in love with the beauty of this city.

Working with masculine papers can be a challenge for me as I rarely doing masculine or vintage type layouts. Most of my layouts are girly and feminine, so I really enjoyed the challenge of creating something a little different to my usual style. And to help create a more masculine layout, I opted to go with pale dusty blue to contrast with the creams, browns and blacks of the papers.

Off The Page Metal Heart Box And A Layout

Hello friends! I hope you have been having a wonderful weekend? 

Julianne here today, sharing two projects with you. Firstly a heart shaped metal container which has been decorated, and a layout using the new Madeleine range from Bo-Bunny. 

For my first project, I started with this heart-shaped metal container (which I have had in my cupboard for way too many years!). I then sprayed it with white gesso, and gave it a coat of Mod Podge for protection. 

I added ribbon and pearls around the outside edge of the base. On the top, I added a paper doily, an Imaginarium Designs chipboard doily which has been enamel embossed, Denise's flourishes which have been coated with white gesso, hand-made paper roses (made with Marion Smith's Motley papers), and an Imaginarium Designs chipboard dragonfly that has been powder embossed.  

I even covered the inside to make sure it looked pretty. :)

For my second project I have created a layout using Bo Bunny's Madeleine range. I just adore the soft colours in this range - so, so very pretty. 

 "YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE"

This is one of my all time favourite photos of my daughters (it is usually hard to get them to pose together without making faces). I have layered my background papers, and done a lot of fussy cutting around frames, flowers, and birds. 

 

I have powder embossed the title and cogs with Antiquities Frosted Crystal embossing powder. The balloon has been coated with grey ink and embossed with clear embossing powder. The corner flourish has been embossed with Enamel Embossing powder. And of course I have finished the page off with a little bling, and some glittered Prima roses. 

I have decorated the fussy-cut frames with Liquid Pearls in various matching colours. And added a dash of Kindy Glitz to the flowers.

These large tags are by Imaginarium Designs and I just love them as they are just the perfect size for my to have fun with different types of product and techniques!

In Shades Of White And Blue

Hello Everyone! It's Julianne here today to share two projects filled with wonderful Imaginarium Designs chipboard. The first project is a photo frame that I have decorated, and the second is a layout I created about my cat Thor.

I purchased this frame at a discount store for $6. It was plain white, with only a resin heart attached by a piece of brown string. The rest of the frame was a clean slate, just waiting to be decorated. I wanted to keep the simplicity of the frame, and not over-power it with decorations and colour. So, I opted to stick with white, and a dash of red.

I started by colouring the word "LOVE". I used red ink, allowed it to dry, then coated it with Glossy Accents, as this would give it shine, and protection from chipping.  

Next, I painted a leaf branch with white gesso, and stuck it to the frame. In front of the branch, I have added a multitude of white roses, all sprayed with Tattered Angels Dazzling Diamonds Glimmermist for a subtle shine and sparkle. I have adhered the roses using Helmar Liquid Glue Dots as this allows time to reposition the flowers (if necessary) before they dry. 

The butterflies have also been painted with white gesso, before being coated with an iridescent white embossing powder. I have finished the butterflies with two tiny pearls added to the centre. 

Lastly, I took Denise's Art Deco Embellishment 1 Border, and cut it in half. I then painted it with white gesso, before adhering it along the roof edge of the frame. I then finished the roof edge by added more flowers, rows of pearls, and another butterfly. 

So, I have taken a cheap $6 frame, and turned it into a gorgeous present for a special someone. Who said scrap-booking had to be expensive?

Now, on to the shades of blue, with my layout "Hello Pretty Kitty".

I really didn't have a plan when I started this layout - all I knew was that I wanted to scrap a picture of my cat Thor. But I wasn't sure what colours to use because he is ginger, and the background is boring. So I opted for shades of blue - he is a boy, after all!

I have used numerous techniques, textures, and mediums in this layout. The background was created using mist sprays, plumber's tape, and washi tape. I have used crushed glass glitter, and glue, to create the sparkling "drips" that hang from the top and bottom of the layout. And I have used Viva Ferro texture paste and a stencil, to create the border patterns on the layout.

I have taken Loolabelle's circular cross hatch and cut it in half, painted it with white gesso, and adhered it under the photo, on opposite sides. The title "HELLO" has been coated with black ink, then heat embossed with Stampendous Aged Black Embossing Enamel. 

The butterfly has been coated with grey ink, then heat embossed with a silver iridescent embossing powder. I have finished it by adding a Prima crystal to the centre. 

And finally, the corner flourish and the wrought iron embellishments have been coated with grey ink, before heat embossing them with Stampendous Aged Silver Embossing Enamel. I just love the rich metallic look that is achieved with embossing enamel - it is a gorgeous mixture of lush and vintage. 

And who said I can't have flowers just because it's a layout about a boy? (Even if he is just a cat).

Of course I've got flowers - and bling!
